Thuso Mbedu

The Woman King grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office. Thuso Mbedu led the film. She played Nawi, a young woman who becomes an Agojie warrior — a member of the all-female military regiment that protected the Kingdom of Dahomey in West Africa — opposite Viola Davis as General Nanisca. The film was produced by Sony Pictures, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, and distributed globally. That it crossed $100 million is the most commercially significant achievement by any African-born actor in the history of cinema, by the specific measure of global box office on a film in which they hold the lead role.

Before The Woman King, there was The Underground Railroad (2021) — Barry Jenkins’s Amazon Prime Video limited series based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, which followed Cora, an enslaved woman in 1800s America who escapes via a literal underground railroad. Mbedu played Cora across ten episodes. She received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series, a SAG Award nomination, and a Critics Choice nomination. She became the first South African actor to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

She is from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. She trained at the South African Theatre and Performance Research institute in Johannesburg before departing for the United States. She is now one of Hollywood’s most in-demand performers under 35.

The Scores

Box Office: 8.8. The Woman King. $100 million global box office as lead actress. No other African-born actor has led a film to that figure. The 8.8 is calibrated against the scale of the global theatrical market — films that cross $200 million would score higher — but within the context of a film led by African women about African historical subject matter, this performance is extraordinary and should be scored as such.

Audience: 9.2. The highest audience score in the Commercial Index across all profiles so far. Mbedu’s audience spans the South African domestic market, the pan-African continental audience, the African diaspora in the US and UK, and the mainstream American audience that The Woman King and The Underground Railroad reached. The breadth of that audience — across geography, language, culture, and platform — is unmatched by any other African performer in the current Commercial Index.

Brand Value: 9.0. L’Oréal brand ambassador. Tiffany & Co partnership. Emmy nomination. SAG nomination. Critics Choice nomination. TIME recognition. The institutional endorsement structure surrounding Mbedu is the most prestigious available to any African performer — her partnerships are with the global luxury tier, not the regional endorsement market. The 9.0 reflects that institutional positioning.

Culture: 9.1. The Woman King is a cultural event beyond its box office. For the global Black diaspora, the film’s representation of African warrior women as the subject of a mainstream Hollywood action drama — not as background characters or victims but as protagonists of a story about strategy, courage, and self-determination — produced an audience response that went beyond cinephilia. The film was discussed in terms of what it meant rather than only how it looked. The Underground Railroad produced a similar response for a different audience: Whitehead’s Pulitzer winner adapted by Barry Jenkins, with Mbedu as the emotional centre of the entire ten-episode arc.

Streaming: 9.3. The highest streaming score in the Commercial Index. The Underground Railroad on Amazon Prime Video globally. The Woman King streaming performance post-theatrical on multiple platforms. Mbedu’s streaming footprint is the largest of any African performer in the index — the combination of a landmark limited series and a $100 million theatrical film produces a global streaming presence that crosses every major platform.

Overall: 9.1. The highest overall score in the Commercial Index to date. The most commercially successful African-born performer on the international market.
