Gugulethu Zuma-Ncube has spent more than a decade building television in the part of the market where discipline is visible every day.

Through Stained Glass Productions, she is associated with Uzalo, the Zulu-language SABC drama that began in 2015 and developed into one of South Africa’s most watched television properties. The production model requires continuing scripts, dependable delivery, returning audiences and the ability to operate at broadcast volume.

In 2026, that experience produced a different kind of commercial signal. Zuma-Ncube served as executive producer and co-director of The Polygamist, the Netflix adaptation of Zimbabwean author Sue Nyathi’s novel.

Reuters reports that the series reached nearly 28 million views after its June release, remained in Netflix’s global Top 10 for seven consecutive weeks and charted in 62 countries.

The result moves Zuma-Ncube into the RollCall Africa Commercial Index because it connects three forms of value: sustained domestic television production, control through a production company and verified international streaming reach.

The Scores

Box Office: 5.8. Zuma-Ncube’s commercial record is built primarily in television rather than theatrical cinema. There is no current public box-office result comparable to the producers whose influence is measured through ticket sales. The score recognises screen-sector scale while preserving the distinction between television reach and cinema revenue.

Audience: 9.0. Few African producers have evidence across both long-running broadcast audiences and a current global streaming breakout. Uzalo established familiarity at domestic scale. The Polygamist added nearly 28 million reported Netflix views and Top 10 placement in 62 countries. The public figures do not disclose subscriber conversion or completion rate, but they establish repeated attention well beyond one territory.

Brand Value: 8.0. Stained Glass Productions gives Zuma-Ncube a company identity beyond an individual credit. Its value comes from delivery history, broadcaster relationships and association with culturally grounded serial drama. The next increase depends on making the company brand more legible internationally, expanding its owned catalogue and demonstrating that the current streaming performance can produce repeat global commissions on strong terms.

Culture: 9.1. Zuma-Ncube’s strongest commercial work does not treat Zulu language and social structures as obstacles to be removed. The Polygamist uses patriarchy, polygamy, class mobility and family power as the centre of its drama. Its underlying work comes from a Zimbabwean author and its screen form is distinctly South African. The global result strengthens the case that cultural specificity can be a distribution asset when character conflict remains legible.

Streaming: 9.2. This is the decisive score. Seven consecutive weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10, presence in 62 countries and nearly 28 million reported views constitute a substantial public streaming result for an African series. The score stops short of the maximum because public data do not show completion, retention, production economics or the share of value returned to the producer.

Overall: 8.3. Rising. Zuma-Ncube is not a new producer, but her commercial position is rising internationally. Her next negotiation will show whether the success of The Polygamist becomes company leverage rather than a single-title achievement.

Why the index is moving now

A long-running television programme and a global streaming series require different release systems, but they reward several of the same capabilities. Both need repeatable story engines, large production teams, deadline discipline and characters able to sustain many hours of attention.

Zuma-Ncube’s advantage is that she did not approach streaming as a filmmaker attempting to stretch a two-hour structure across episodes. She came from serial production.

That background may help explain why The Polygamist could produce continued viewing. A provocative premise attracts the first episode. Telenovela craft creates the next one.

The global performance is also useful because it is not built around cultural neutrality. Zuma-Ncube told Reuters that the story was culturally specific while its wider themes remained recognisable. That balance is central to the commercial case for African television abroad.

The ownership question

The index rewards commercial control, not visibility alone.

Stained Glass gives Zuma-Ncube production infrastructure and an organisational base. However, the contractual position of The Polygamist, including underlying rights, future participation and the value of a continuation, has not been publicly disclosed.

The next score should respond to what the company retains. A producer can deliver a global hit and still hold limited control over the asset after the licence. Stronger index movement would come from repeat commissions, participation in future value, catalogue ownership and the ability to finance development before a platform enters.

The adaptation also connects publishing and television. A successful relationship with African authors can create a continuing pipeline rather than a one-off title.

The next commercial test

The immediate temptation is to search for another provocative family drama. That would copy the visible subject rather than the operating strength.

Zuma-Ncube’s next test is whether Stained Glass can repeat the combination across another story world, establish a recognisable international company brand and convert platform success into better terms for writers, directors and the business itself.

It will also matter whether the global attention strengthens the domestic production base. New commissions should create repeat work, senior crew progression and development capacity between shoots.

Nearly 28 million views is the reason for the present index entry. The future rank will depend on what that audience result allows the producer to own, negotiate and build next.
